What Is Paint Protection Film?

An Invisible Shield for Your Paint

Paint Protection Film (PPF) is a durable, optically-clear urethane film applied over your vehicle's painted surfaces. Unlike ceramic coating — which is a chemical bond — PPF is a physical layer that absorbs impacts: stone chips, road debris, light scratches, and abrasion. It's the closest thing to armour for your paint.

Stone-Chip Defence

Absorbs high-speed impacts from stones, gravel and road debris that would otherwise chip through to bare metal.

Self-Healing

Light swirl marks and surface scratches disappear with heat — from the sun, engine warmth, or a warm water rinse.

Hydrophobic Surface

Water, dirt and bugs release easily. PPF is inherently smooth and slick, making cleaning faster and safer.

Optically Clear

Premium film is virtually invisible when properly installed. It won't yellow, cloud, or alter your paint's colour.

PPF + Ceramic Coating: the ultimate protection package.

PPF absorbs physical impacts; ceramic coating adds deep gloss, UV protection, and extreme hydrophobics. Many Arko clients choose PPF on high-impact areas (full front) and ceramic coating everywhere else. We can coat directly over the film for a seamless, glassy finish.

Why Installation Quality Is Everything

A Bad Install Is Worse Than No Film

PPF is only as good as the hands that apply it. Lifting edges, trapped dust, visible seams, and yellowing are all installation failures — not film failures. Here's what Arko's accredited installation guarantees.

Precision Pattern Cutting

Every panel is cut to fit your exact vehicle — not stretched or over-trimmed. Computer-cut patterns where available, hand-finished edges for seamless coverage. No exposed paint at panel edges.

Controlled Studio Environment

All Arko PPF is installed in our N4 Gateway studio — a clean, dust-controlled bay with proper lighting. No driveway installs, no wind-blown contaminants trapped under the film.

Edge-Wrapped, Not Edge-to-Edge

Where possible, film is wrapped around panel edges — not cut flush at the edge. This means no visible film lines, no peeling corners, and full protection that disappears into the bodywork.

No Paint Correction, No PPF

Paint is corrected before film goes on. Trapping swirl marks, oxidation, or contaminants under PPF seals them in permanently. Arko preps every surface to a flawless finish before a single panel of film touches it.

What to watch for at a cheap PPF shop.

Pre-cut 'kits' that stop short of panel edges — leaving borders that collect wax and dirt
Film stretched thin at corners to avoid cutting — leads to lifting and failure within months
No paint correction before application — swirls and oxidation sealed in permanently
Outdoor or uncontrolled installation — dust, pollen and insects trapped under the film
Unbranded or rebranded film with no manufacturer warranty
One-size-fits-all approach — no consultation about your actual driving needs

FAQ

PPF Questions

What is paint protection film (PPF)?
PPF is a clear, durable urethane film applied over a vehicle's painted surfaces to protect against stone chips, scratches, and road rash. Originally developed for military helicopter blades, modern automotive PPF is optically clear, self-healing, and virtually invisible when professionally installed. Arko uses premium, manufacturer-backed film installed to accredited standards.
What's the difference between PPF and ceramic coating?
PPF is a physical urethane layer that absorbs impacts and scratches; ceramic coating is a chemical layer that bonds to paint, adding gloss and resisting UV and chemical stains. PPF stops stone chips; ceramic coating amplifies gloss and makes cleaning easier. They complement each other — many Arko clients combine PPF on high-impact zones with ceramic coating everywhere else.
Does PPF self-heal?
Yes. Premium PPF has a self-healing top coat — light swirl marks, wash-induced marring, and surface scratches disappear with heat. Park in the sun, let the engine warm the bonnet, or rinse with warm water, and the film's elastomeric polymers reflow to a smooth, clear finish. Deep cuts that penetrate the film will not self-heal.
How much does PPF cost in Pretoria?
Arko's PPF packages start from approximately R8,000 for Partial Front, from R16,000 for Full Front, from R35,000 for Full Body, and from R12,000 for custom Track/Enthusiast coverage. Final price depends on vehicle size, panel complexity, and coverage level — we'll give you a firm quote after assessing your vehicle.
How long does PPF last?
Premium PPF is warrantied for 7–10 years against yellowing, cracking, peeling, and delamination when professionally installed. With proper care — which we'll teach you — many installations last well beyond the warranty period. The film can be safely removed at any point without damaging the paint underneath.
Can I combine PPF with a ceramic coating?
Yes — and we recommend it. Ceramic coating can be applied over PPF for added gloss, deeper hydrophobics, and easier cleaning. The combination gives you physical impact protection (PPF) plus the chemical and UV benefits of ceramic. Arko offers a PPF + Ceramic package — ask us about it.
Will PPF turn yellow or peel over time?
Not with premium, professionally installed film. Modern PPF has UV-stable clear coats that resist yellowing — this is covered under the manufacturer warranty. Peeling and lifting are almost always installation failures (poor edge adhesion, stretched film, contamination during application), not film defects. Arko's controlled studio installation eliminates these risks.
Can I wash and detail a car with PPF?
Yes. You can wash, wax, and detail a PPF-protected car normally. We recommend pH-neutral products and avoiding harsh solvents or abrasive polishes on the film. The self-healing top coat means light washing swirls won't accumulate — they'll heal out with warmth. We'll give you full care instructions.
Where can I get PPF fitted in Pretoria East?
Arko Detailing, 77 Amatole Road, N4 Gateway Industrial Park, The Willows, Pretoria East. All PPF is installed in our controlled in-studio environment — not in a driveway, not in a tent.
